Save the Planet with Soap Nuts

My mother was always a bit of a healthnut.  Growing up, our pantry was always bare.  My friends’ pantries were loaded with the store bought delights of the 80s.  They would have Twinkies, Ding-dongs, Little Debbies and Star Crunches.  I  would occasionally get the homemade chocolate chip or oatmeal cookie.  My friends would have their pick of crunchy snacks – Doritos, Fritos, Barbecue flavored Pringles.  The best I could do was peanut butter toast… on whole wheat bread.

So, healthy eating was inculcated in me from a young age.  After a short period of rebellion during high school and college, I embraced healthy eating and appreciated the advice from my mom on supplements, special diets, etc.  Now that I am a parent, I find myself torturing my son with healthy eating in the same way my mom tortured me.  Maybe someday he will appreciate it:)

My interest in healthy eating and healing our bodies through food has made me increasingly environmentally conscious as well.

So, I am on a journey to make our home as non-toxic and eco-friendly as possible and will share on this blog any strategies I find that work for me.

I started using soap nuts about a month ago and have found it to be a super easy transition to make.  Just pop a few of these nuts in a pouch or an old sock tied in a knot, toss them in the washer, and run the cycle as normal.  Re-use the nuts for 3 or 4 cycles, dispose used nuts in with the compostables, and add some new nuts to the pouch/sock.  Easy as that.  No more chemicals on our clothes.  No more chemicals polluting our water supply.  No plastic containers.

Clothes come out just fine.

So…. help each other, help the world!!  Use Soap nuts!!
